PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to realize high contrast by using liquid material showing the blue phase. CONSTITUTION: A first substrate(200) and a second substrate(201) having liquid crystal layer(208) in between is formed. The liquid layer comprises a liquid crystal material showing a blue phase. Pixel electrode layers(230a,230b) have opened pattern formed between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer. Common electrode layers(231a,231b,231c) have opened pattern formed between a second substrate and the liquid crystal layer. The pixel electrode is close to the liquid crystal layer. The common electrode is close to the liquid crystal layer.
