The towbar has a coupling rod (12) to receive the coupling element of a trailer, which is movable in a socket (16) between a retracted rest position and an extended working position. The coupling rod is guided in the longitudinal direction of the socket and is torsionally fixed between the retracted position and the working position by positively locking elements, e.g. a guide slot (22) and a lug (24) that fits in guide slot. These elements are formed so that as the coupling rod is moved between the retracted and working positions, it is rotated through a predetermined angle value. The guide slot is curved in the direction of the socket axis and is provided on the rod. The lug protrudes into a longitudinal hole in the socket in which the rod slides.
