1. A method of inhibiting sodium ion transport in an airway epithelial cell comprising contacting the cell with a compound including a zinc-binding moiety in an amount effective to inhibit sodium ion transport and to inhibit a histone deacetylase in a cell, wherein the compound includes an oxyamide linkage and a C4-10 hydrocarbon chain containing at least two carbon-carbon double bonds and wherein the compound is of formula (I)wherein
A is a cyclic moiety selected from the group consisting of aryl, or heteroaryl Y1 is —CH2—, —O—, —N(Ra)—, or a bond, and Y2 is —CH2—, —O—, or —N(Rc)—; each of Ra and Rc, independently, being hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, hydroxylalkyl, hydroxyl, or haloalkyl; L is the C4-10 hydrocarbon chain containing at least two carbon-carbon double bonds: R1 is hydrogen; R2 is hydrogen; and each of X1 and X2, independently, is —O—; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof,in an amount effective to inhibit sodium ion transport. |
