PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a belt life detection system, discriminating the life of a transmission belt. SOLUTION: A toothed belt 10 is wrapped round a pulley to be used. A contact surface of the toothed belt 10 with the pulley is formed by coating the outside of a conductive canvas 16 with an insulating layer 18. The conductive canvas 16 has conductivity. Electric resistance between a part of the contact surface and a second part of the contact surface is measured. When the insulating layer 18 wears away due to the use of the belt, the conductive canvas 16 is exposed to lower the measured electric resistance. Thus, lowering of transmission performance of the toothed belt 10 to the pulley is determined according to such lowering of the electric resistance. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
