PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide dental floss having improved resistance to shredding and fraying. SOLUTION: This dental floss consists of at least one piece of multifilament yarn subjected to a coating. The yarn constituting the floss is substantially not twisted and has interlinkage nodes of about 0.5 to about 3.5 inches in frequency. The base weight of the yarn is about 500 to about 1200 denier. The coating applied to the yarn consists of a non-water soluble binder. Optionally, the floss may be coated by a second coating consisting of a water-soluble material, such as polyethylene glycol, in order to carry additives or additive arom. The yarn which is substantially untwisted or untwisted at all and has the air interlinkage to the optimum extent is loosely mated to the extent of filling a sufficient amt. of the coating material between the filaments but is sufficiently tightly mated to the extent of imparting the resistance to schredding and fraying to the yarn and nevertherless has a supple touch.
