PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accomplish a technology with which recording efficiency or transmission efficiency of a distance image can be improved by reducing the quantity of information when recording the distance image. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus captures a distance image representing the distance to an object and a main image obtained by imaging the object, reduces the number of gradations in recording the distance image on a recording medium in accordance with distance frequency distribution of the distance image or a compression rate relating to encoding when encoding and recording each image, encodes, and records the distance image of which the number of gradations is reduced.
