An animal feedstock comprising a transgenic plant or part thereof that includes a first modified protein including a phytase and a first intein fused within the phytase in such a position that the presence of the first intein substantially reduces the activity of the phytase, wherein the first intein is capable of cis splicing the first modified protein.
