A method and an apparatus for controlling a beam switching antenna system are provided to compare a nondirectional beam with a directional beam while an optimum beam direction is searched, and to omit an unnecessary angle searching process according to the compared results, thereby minimizing a searching time while reducing power consumption. A controller receives a base station signal, and performs an initialization(S91). The controller forms a nondirectional beam(S92), and compares a strength or an error rate of the base station signal with that of a base station signal received while the beam is formed in current direction(S93). If the strength of the base station signal is bigger than that of the base station signal in current direction, the controller forms the beam in other direction, and receives a base station signal(S94), then compares a strength or an error rate of a signal measured in the second direction with that of the signal in the current direction(S95). If the strength of the signal in the second direction is bigger, the controller forms the beam in the second direction(S96). If the base station signal is received at less than a reference level, the controller re-performs the steps 'S92 to S97'(S98). |
