Invention herewith described refers to the method and system for implementation of the support for nonstandard buttons of multi-button computer mice. The invention allows that a programme can react to the clicks of nonstandard buttons (i.e. the buttons for which an operating system has no standard support, e.g. for buttons above the fifth) for different multi-button mouse models of various manufacturers, without need for the programme to communicate with the drivers of these mice. In the support programme that is usually provided with the multi-button mice, there is usually a possibility for user to assign to the mouse buttons an action of synthesizing the predefined keyboard key combinations. In the system, according to the invention, there is also a secondary support programme that can detect the keys synthesized by the mouse support programme if instructed to do so by the user. The method according to the invention means that the mouse support programme which communicates with the mouse through the driver, detects the clicks of nonstandard mouse buttons (14) and then synthesizes the keyboard key combination predefined for that button by the user (16), and the secondary mouse support programme detects the occurrence of the predefined keyboard key (18) combination, on the basis of which it decides that a certain mouse button (20) is pressed). After that, the secondary mouse support programme can perform various actions assigned to that mouse button (22).
