PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonization furnace which can reduce the amount of steam evaporated from a liquid seal such as water in the lower portion of a vertical carbonization furnace, prevents the wear of a muffle used as a material for composing the furnace, can continuously be operated for a long period to remarkably improve the productivity of the carbonized fibers, and can simultaneously improve the quality of the fibers, and to provide a method for producing the carbonized fibers. SOLUTION: This carbonization furnace 1 which is used for continuously traveling and calcining fibers 12 to be carbonized to travel through a muffle 4 in an inert atmosphere and in which a conduit 6 is provided on the fiber exit side of the oven and dipped in a liquid to seal the conduit is characterized by disposing an inert gas-supplying port 8 in the seal conduit 6 on the fiber yarn exit side, and disposing an inert gas-discharging port 9 at a place separated 500 mm or more from the inert gas-supplying port 8 on the liquid seal side.
