A method of providing voice communication between players P2, P3 during an online game comprises recognising a player's voice using voice recognition when speech is inputted at a player computer 1300-3, selecting from predetermined statements 61 a statement corresponding to the inputted speech, transmitting information about the selected statement to a second player computer 1300-2, receiving the information at the second player computer, extracting from stored voice data a speech statement corresponding to the received information, and outputting a sound based on the extracted voice data. The statement may be selected based on the nature and order of keywords identified in the inputted speech, e.g. a sender identification keyword 50, a destination computer identification keyword 52, a statement identification keyword 54, and a statement completion identification keyword 56. The statement may be selected from a subset of candidate statements, the subset being based on the current game state. The outputted sound may comprise voice data extracted from stored voice data of actors associated with player characters. The method is preferably used to provide voice communication between players in shooting games (see figures 3 & 4). |
