PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize a color material in consideration of factors deciding not only a color gamut but also color image quality. SOLUTION: The initial value of spectral transmittance of each color is stored in a color material characteristic initial setting unit 1. A printer model 2 calculates a spectral reflection rate of halftone such as solid of a single color or mixed colors from the spectral transmittance of each color material, and predicts an output color. An evaluating unit 4 evaluates the predicted output color. A color material characteristic correcting unit 5 corrects the shape of the spectral transmittance of each color. The corrected color characteristic is used to predict and evaluate the output color, and an optimum color material deciding unit 7 decides a combination of color materials each having the characteristic of the best evaluation result 6.
