PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source unit capable of obtaining the illumination light of appropriate light quantity and chromaticity at all times, and a drive control method of the light source unit. SOLUTION: The light source unit 12 is provided with a light source 67 for supplying excitation light to the phosphor 51 of an illumination part 49 disposed at the distal end part 14 of an electronic endoscope 10, and a light source driver 69 for supplying a pulse-like driving current to the light source 67. The driving current is supplied within the exposure period of a solid-state imaging element 42. One of the pulse number, pulse width and pulse amplitude of the driving current is increased/decreased so that the accumulated light quantity and chromaticity of the illumination light become appropriate independent of the individual difference of the light source 67.
