The invention relates to a vanillin Schiff base compound of formula (I):(I) and to method of making a vanillin Schiff base compound. The vanillin Schiff base compounds may be glycidated to form a biobased epoxy resin. The invention also relates to a glycidated vanillin compound having epoxy functionality. The biobased epoxy resin of the invention and the glycidated vanillin compound may be used as thermosets in coating compositions.
