PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic control device of an automatic transmission capable of supplying a flow of oil supplied from an assist pump for compensating for shortage of flow of oil pressure without delay of response in the hydraulic control device of the belt type continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: In this control device of the belt type continuously variable transmission including a main pump normally driven by an engine and an assist pump driven by an electric motor, a transmission control unit is provided with a sudden pressure change judging means for judging the occurrence of sudden oil pressure change, and an assist pump drive or non-drive judging means which drives the assist pump when the sudden pressure change judging means judges the occurrence of a sudden oil pressure change, while, refrains from driving the assist pump when the sudden pressure change judging means judges non-occurrence of a sudden oil pressure change.
