PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of increasing the detection accuracy of the size of an original and being reduced in size and in cost, by eliminating the need for an image sensor that is dedicated to the detection of the size of the original. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes a first light source 110, disposed on one side of a transport path of an original for irradiating light on one surface of the original; a reading unit 1a for reading the image of the original, by receiving light irradiated from the first light source 110 and reflected on the one side of the original; a second light source 210, disposed on the other side of the transport path for irradiating light to be received by the reading unit 1a; and a control unit for detecting the original, on the basis of a resultant output of the reading unit 1a upon receipt of the light irradiated from the second light source 210.
