PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal medium having very short addressing and low threshold voltages for using in a field sequential mode LCD. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal medium contains one or more compounds represented by formula IA and one or more compounds represented by formula IB (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>each represent an alkyl group, ring A represents 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-cyclohexylene, r is 0 or 1, Y<SP>1</SP>to Y<SP>7</SP>each represent H or F, X<SP>0</SP>is F or OCF<SB>3</SB>).
