<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent rollers from being separated from one another by stopping the driving of a motor immediately when a cancel operation is performed and driving to close the delivery rollers when the delivery rollers are determined to be able to be initialized during reading using a double-sided carrying device. <P>SOLUTION: The delivery rollers are not initialized immediately after a stop instruction is given. After a document in a carrying route is determined to have been removed, the delivery rollers are initialized. Whether the delivery rollers can be initialized or not is determined at specified time intervals.
