Process for making a particulate material of general formula (I),
€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ Li 1+x (Ni a Co b Mn c M d ) 1-x O 2 €ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ€ƒ(I)
wherein
M is selected from Al and Ti and Zr and W,
x is in the range of from 0.015 to 0.03,
a is in the range of from 0.3 to 0.95,
b is in the range of from 0.05 to 0.35,
c is in the range of from zero to 0.35,
d is in the range of from 0.001 to 0.05,
with a + b + c + d = 1
said process comprising the following steps:
(a) co-precipitating a mixed hydroxide of nickel, cobalt and, optionally, manganese from a solution of water-soluble salts of nickel, cobalt and, optionally, manganese by contacting such solution with a solution of alkali metal hydroxide,
(b) adding an aqueous solution of an aluminate, titanate, zirconate, or tungstate and thereby co-precipitating a layer of a mixed hydroxide of nickel and cobalt and, optionally, manganese and at least one oxide or hydroxide of aluminium or titanium or zirconium or tungsten on the particles formed in step (a),
(c) removing particles of (Ni a Co b Mn c Al d )(OH) 2+d or (Ni a Co b Mn c Ti d )(OH) 2+2d or (Ni a Co b Mn c Zr d )(OH) 2+2d or (Ni a CO b Mn c W d )(OH) 2+4d , respectively, so obtained and drying them in the presence of oxygen,
(d) mixing the particles obtained in step (c) with at least one Li compound selected from Li 2 O, LiOH and Li 2 CO 3 ,
(e) calcining the mixture obtained according to step (d) at a temperature in the range of from 750 to 950°C,
wherein addition of water-soluble salts of nickel, cobalt and, optionally, manganese may be continued during step (b), and
wherein steps (a) and (b) are being performed according to a continuous process and in at least two different vessels. |
