<p>Compression of image data with little visual deterioration is realized. Nonlinear compression and DPCM compression are serially carried out. A compressor (41) using nonlinear compression receives image data (one pixel is composed of L-bits) on each color component and compresses the image to M bits (M<L) according to an adequate compression conversion table (TB1) set according to image information extracted from the original image data. The compressor (41) carries out compression conversion of a characteristic similar to the gamma curve characteristic used for the gamma correction carried out at succeeding stage. The nonlinear compressor (41) inputs the image data compression-converted into M bits into a DPCM compressor (42). The DPCM compressor (42) finally compresses the image data into N bits (for example, N=10) by using a quantization table (TB2). The compressed image data is stored in an image memory (7) through a packing section (43).</p> |
