PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide metal based friction materials and resin based friction materials having high coefficients of friction and improved abrasion resistance which can suitably be used as brake materials and clutch materials. SOLUTION: In the friction material containing a matrix composed of at least one of Cu, Ni, Fe, and an alloy thereof, a lubricant, and a friction control agent, the friction control agent contains Al2O3 and ZrO2 and the weight ratio of Al203 to (Al2O3+ZrO2) in the friction control agent is 0.3-0.7.
