PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain stable and precise performance with clear threshold setting when discriminating DVD-RAM out of a group of disks with low reflected light intensity. SOLUTION: The system for discriminating optical disk comprises the following steps: a step (step S1, S2) for focusing on track of the rotary driven optical disk; a step (step S3) for setting tracking error amplitude for one track in tracking adjustment; a step (step S4) for carrying out tracking control with setting not to execute polarity reversal; a step (step S5) for measuring the detected tracking error amplitude (if it is DVD-RAM, the tracking error is detected at a boundary between a Land and Groove); a step (step S6) for judging if the measured tracking error amplitude is 80 percent or more of the amplitude set at the step S3; and a step (step S7, S8) for determining DVD-RAM if it is true, otherwise one of other type disks.
