PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sliding member having a high friction reducing effect by arranging recessed parts so as to promote the flow of a viscous fluid to a direction orthogonal to a sliding direction, and changing the arrangement form of the recessed parts according to the shape of a contact part between a first member and a second member. SOLUTION: The sliding member 10 comprises the first member 11 and second member 12 sliding through the viscous fluid, and fine recessed parts 13 formed on at least one of a sliding surface of the first member and a sliding surface of the second member. The recessed parts are arranged so as to promote the flow of the viscous fluid to the sliding direction 21 when B/H is 1 or less, with respect to the shape of the contact part 14 between the first member and the second member, wherein the width of the contact part is B, and the length laid along the sliding direction 21 is H. When B/H is larger than 1, the recessed parts are arranged so as to promote the flow of the viscous fluid to the direction 22 orthogonal to the sliding direction. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
