PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a premixed compression ignition internal combustion engine capable of stably controlling ignition performance without increasing the cost or deteriorating fuel economy. SOLUTION: A catalyst for reforming fuel is provided in an exhaust recirculation passage for recirculating exhaust to the engine, and a sub fuel injection valve is provided on the exhaust recirculation passage on an upstream side compared to the catalyst. Request for ignition performance is determined from an engine rotation speed and request torque, and a reformed fuel ratio satisfying the ignition performance is calculated, and the fuel reformed by the catalyst in an amount corresponding to the reformed fuel ratio out of a total input fuel amount determined by the request torque is input into the engine.
