An LCD is provided to use no lower polarizing plate, thereby reducing the number of component parts, by attaching a protective film having a polarizing function onto a backlight unit. An LCD cell(105) includes upper and lower substrates coupled with each other and a liquid crystal layer interposed between the upper and lower substrates. A polarizing film(106) is attached onto an upper surface of the LCD cell. A backlight unit(B/L) is installed below the LCD panel, and emits a polarized light to the LCD panel. The backlight unit includes one or more light emitting lamps(111), a light guiding plate(113) for transferring the light of the light emitting lamps to the LCD panel, a diffusion sheet(115) and a prism sheet, which are deposited on the light guiding plate, and a protective sheet(117) on the prism sheet. The protective sheet contains a polarizing material.
