The method involves determining a probability (P) of a rollover event of a vehicle (1) by a determining device (2). Reversible passenger protection units (4) are activated by a control unit (3) from a preset threshold value (S1) of the probability before the rollover event of the vehicle. The probability is additionally compared with data (D) determined by sensors (6) e.g. spring path sensor, and is tested for plausibility. Irreversible passenger protection units (5) e.g. airbag, pyrotechnic belt-pretensioner, are activated by the control unit during rollover event of the vehicle.
