A communication terminal for receiving data through movement of a pen and an operating method of the communication terminal are provided to collect data which includes numbers or characters from movement of a pen mounted on or detached from a terminal body of the communication terminal. A terminal body(100) includes a predetermined housing structure. A pen(110) is designed to be received in the housing structure included in the terminal body(100), and has an operation recognition sensor for converting a user's action into a predetermined electric signal. A connector delivers the electric signal to the terminal body(100). An operation recognition mode controller controls inactivation or activation of the sensor, and converts an operation of a communication terminal into an operation recognition mode. When the sensor is activated, a data collector receives data collected through the sensor included in the pen(110), through the connector.
