PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous determination of a fine particle counter and delay of determination by preventing retention of water in a pipe for backwashing. SOLUTION: In the membrane filtration apparatus 100, a first pipe 105 communicating a permeating water side of a membrane module 101 filtering treating water with a storage tank 106 is communicated with a second pipe 108 forming a backwashing line by a third pipe 113, and a backwashing pump 109 provided on the way of the second pipe 108 is located at a part higher than the storage tank 106, and one end of the second pipe 108 is inserted below the water level of filtrate in the storage tank 106. When switching from the backwashing to filtering, the backwashing pump 109 is stopped, a second valve 110 is closed and a first valve 107 is opened, and the filtrate for backwashing in the second pipe 108 is discharged to the storage tank 106 by the self-weight and pumping by a filtrate pump.
