RUTHENIUM COMPLEX AND PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ALCOHOL COMPOUND

A ruthenium complex functioning as a catalyst for heterogeneous catalysis which is represented by (R,RR)-ruthenium complexes of the polymer-bonded type. It is almost equal to ruthenium complexes having a binaphthyl group not bonded to a polymer (catalysts for homogeneous catalysis) in reducing ability, i.e., the ability to reduce carbonyl compounds to alcohol compounds. Since the ruthenium complex is a catalyst for heterogeneous catalysis, it can be easily separated from the reaction mixture and is superior in operating efficiency to catalysts for homogeneous catalysis. After being separated and recovered, the ruthenium complex can be reused two or more times. The complex in the reuse shows almost the same reducing ability as in the first use. In the reuse, the ruthenium complex can be repeatedly used to reduce the same substrate or to successively reduce different substrates.
