Cosmetic or dermatological preparations (A) comprises perylene (I) and/or its derivatives. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method to evaluate the efficacy of cosmetic or dermatological photo protection formulation on skin comprising: applying (A) on the skin and visually observing the change or estimating optionally with an contrast enhancing agent whether the change has taken place on the applied area or sufficient (A) has been applied or reapplying (A) is required; and (2) use of (I) and/or its derivatives for visualizing the effect of cosmetic and dermatological photo protection formulation on the skin.
