<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor determining quickly completion of start. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This gas sensor is equipped with: a gas concentration detection element 9a and a monitoring element 10a; a concentration determination part 32 for determining a gas concentration based on an output from the gas concentration detection element 9a; an abnormality determination part 33 for determining an abnormality of the gas concentration detection element 9a based on an output deviation between both elements 9a, 10a; and a mode switching part 31 for switching a detection mode to/from a monitoring mode. In the detection mode, a reference voltage is applied to the gas concentration detection element 9a, and a lower voltage than the reference voltage is applied to the monitoring element 10a. In the monitoring mode, the reference voltage is applied to both elements 9a, 10a, and at a starting time when the power is applied, the same voltage as a voltage applied to the gas concentration detection element 9a in the detection mode is applied to both elements 9a, 10a, and the concentration determination part 32 determines a gas concentration based on an output from the monitoring element 10a until elapse of a fixed time, after elapse of a start determination time set beforehand based on an output characteristic of the monitoring element 10a.
