PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus satisfactorily preventing the cleaning defect of an intermediate transfer body even when the intermediate transfer body has a hard release layer on its surface. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes the intermediate transfer body which has the hard release layer on its surface, carries a toner image, primarily transferred from a latent image carrier, on the hard release layer, and secondarily transfers the carried toner image to a target body; and a cleaning blade which is disposed in contact with the intermediate transfer body and removes toner remaining on the hard release layer of the intermediate transfer body. The image forming apparatus is characterized in that the surface roughness Rz of the hard release layer is 50 to 100 nm, and the cleaning blade has rebound resilience of 20 to 60% and contacts the intermediate transfer body at a contact angle of 8 to 15°with linear pressure of 25 to 40 N/m.
