PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for oil-quenching a steel material with which formation of carburized layer on the steel material surface due to the oil-quenching treatment can be prevented. SOLUTION: In the oil-quenching method for steel material (treating article W) performing heating and cooling processes under vacuum atmosphere or non-oxidation atmosphere in a furnace body constituted by arranging a quenching chamber 3 provided with an oil tank 5 for storing the quenching oil 6 at the lower part successively to a heating chamber 2 across a parting door 4, under the limited time zone after completing the heating process and before starting oil-cooling, a fixed quantity of oxidizing gas is introduced into the quenching chamber 3.
