PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positive and negative ion generator with the effect of removing/inactivating contamination sources from organisms such as viruses, bacteria, mold and allergen by utilizing the respective excellent features of flat and three-dimensional positive and negative ion generating elements, and an air cleaner provided with the positive and negative ion generator. SOLUTION: The positive and negative ion generator is constituted by combining a first positive and negative ion generating element A4 having a flat electrode structure and a second positive and negative ion generating element B4 having a three-dimensional electrode structure excellent in stability against moisture. The first positive and negative ion generating element A4 can discharge positive and negative ions stably over a long period of time for high reliability and has the characteristics of strong impact resistance. The second positive and negative ion generating element B4 maintains the amount of ions generated in a high humidity environment. A moisture detection means can be provided at the positive and negative ion generator, and also a heating means 11 for evaporating stuck moisture can be provided at the first positive and negative ion generating element A4.
