Production of an alkali-free glass comprises forming a glass batch consisting of (in wt.%) 50-70 SiO2, 7.5-20 Al2O3, 4-15 B2O3, 0-5 ZnO, and 5-30 MgO, CaO, SrO or BaO; melting the glass batch; and molding the molten glass. SnO2 and at least one of CeO2, MnO-2, WO3, Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 are added to the glass batch as refining agent. An Independent claim is also included for the alkali-free glass produced. Preferred Features: SnO2 is present in an amount of 0.4-0.8 wt.%. CeO2 is present in an amount of more than 0.5 wt.%. The molding step is carried out by deep drawing.
