PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive zoom position detecting device capable of highly precisely detecting a focal distance. SOLUTION: This device is composed of a zoom motor 35 giving driving force to change the focal distance of a photographic optical system by moving a lens barrel in an optical axis direction, a transmission means for transmitting the driving force of the motor 35 to the lens barrel, a member to be detected which is provided at least at a part of the transmission means, photointerrupter (pulse generating parts) 54 and 55 for generating a pulse signal according as the member to be detected repeatedly passes the same position, and a control part 60 for detecting the moving position of the lens barrel in the optical axis direction based on the pulse signal generated by the photointerrupters 54 and 55.
