The invention relates to a method and a device for assisting a vehicle to start on a slope, wherein a vehicle braking torque is modified according to an estimated vehicle driving torque, taking into account the output torque of the slope. The inventive method is carried out according to the following steps: a reference value is determined for a vehicle driving torque; said reference value is compared with the estimated vehicle driving torque; the braking torque is influenced according to the result of said comparison.
