<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element using the ferroelectric liquid crystal, in which mono-domain alignment of a ferroelectric liquid crystal is obtained without forming an alignment defect such as a zigzag defect, a hairpin defect, a double-domain, and which is excellent in alignment stability to keep the alignment unchanged even when the temperature is risen to or above a phase transition temperature. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element comprises the ferroelectric liquid crystal interposed between two sheets of substrates, and is characterized by having electrodes and photo-alignment layers sequentially formed on respective opposing surfaces of the substrates, wherein components of the photo-alignment layers are photo-reactive materials which impart anisotropy to the photo-alignment layer by generating photochemical reactions, and also characterized in that the components of the photo-alignment layers on both side of the ferroelectric liquid crystal have a composition different from each other. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
