<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus which can attain a displayed image of high contrast and which is excellent in uniformity in black display by suppressing double refraction generated in light transmissive materials constituting optical components such as a polarized beam splitter. <P>SOLUTION: Regarding the image display apparatus equipped with the polarized beam splitter, a temperature difference ▵T<SB>i</SB>as a difference between the highest temperature on the surface of each light transmissive material in an optical system and an ambient temperature is maintained so as to satisfy a relational expression of 0.025≥(2π/λ)×Σ<SB>i=1</SB><SP>n</SP>k<SB>i</SB>×C<SB>i</SB>×α<SB>i</SB>×E<SB>i</SB>×l<SB>i</SB>×▵T<SB>i</SB>. Provided that the center wavelength of illuminating light and modulation light is expressed by λ[m], the optical system is constituted of n pieces (n≥1) of light transmissive material, and regarding the i-th (1≤i≤n) light transmissive material, k<SB>i</SB>is a constant (0.07<k<SB>i</SB><0.13), photoelasticity constant is expressed by C<SB>i</SB>[m<SP>2</SP>/N], linear expansion coefficient is expressed by α<SB>i</SB>[1/K], Young's modulus is expressed by E<SB>i</SB>[10<SP>8</SP>N/m<SP>2</SP>] and an optical length is expressed by l<SB>i</SB>[m]. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
