PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capping operation mechanism for moving a capping unit through a simple arrangement, and to provide a maintenance unit and a liquid ejector equipped with the capping operation mechanism. SOLUTION: A printer comprising a recording head for ejecting ink from a nozzle opening, and a cap unit 35 arranged to move freely between a position abutting against the recording head while surrounding the nozzle opening and a non-abutting position spaced apart from the abutting position is further provided with a capping operation mechanism. The capping operation mechanism has a member 32 moving linearly along a predetermined direction from a drive force transmitted from a drive motor 28 wherein the moving member 32 moves the cap unit 35 in the direction from the non-abutting position toward the abutting position by imparting a displacing force to the cap unit 35 in the way of its linear movement.
