PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the diameter of the end of a string member, to harden the end of the string member and to permanently prevent fray without using a cell chip. SOLUTION: A mold 5 that has a mold hole 11 with an enlarged diameter like a funnel at an opening side and is heated to the vicinity of the melting point of a string member 2 is used, the end of the string member 2 having at least an outer skin part constituted of a thermoplastic resin fiber material is inserted into the mold hole 11 of the mold 5, the end 2a of the string member 2 is reduced in diameter along the tapered shape of the mold hole by the relative rotation between the mold 5 and the string member 2 and the fibers at the end are integrally fused by melting.
