PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system and communication method in which communication can be performed for a longer distance or at higher speed when using one communication cable while assigning it to a plurality of purposes in accordance with carrier frequency bands. SOLUTION: At a time point when starting ADSL MODEM communication, a main control section 123 in a first remote device 102<SB>1</SB>directly connects an ADSL line 111 and an ADSL line interface section 121 and uses a frequency detection section 122 to discriminate presence of a frequency of audio bands (0 to 3.4 kHz). If any audio band is not used, the ADSL MODEM communication is performed using all the bands (0 to 1.1 MHz) including the audio bands. Thus, longer-distance or higher-speed communication can be performed as compared with the case of using only ADSL MODEM bands (30 kHz to 1.1 MHz). COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
