PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate image data of high picture quality by suppressing a deviation between the read length and the conveyance amount. SOLUTION: An image reader is provided in which a CCD line sensor is conveyed, in an image read direction at constant speed. Furthermore, a line start signal prescribing read timing is input to the CCD line sensor at a constant period, and a line-by-line reading operation is performed by the input. Furthermore, the reader temporarily stops read when the free capacity of a buffer becomes small and restarts the read, when prescribed conditions are met; however it sets the read restart position as follows prior to the restart. Namely, based on the errorμ(equal to the read length-conveyance amount) between the read length which is the length of read image data from a head line to a read end line in an image read direction, and the conveyance amount of the CCD line sensor from the read start position corresponding to the head line to the read end line, the read restart position is set in a direction where the error ¾μ¾ becomes smaller.
