The invention relates to a method for operating a two-cycle petrol engine which can be controlled by a throttle valve and comprises at least one cylinder into which fuel is injected directly in an amount dependent on the rotational speed and the position of said throttle valve. In order to stabilise the rotational speed when reducing load on the engine, during reduction of a load on the engine upon exceeding a rotational speed range determined by the position of the throttle valve with a loaded engine, the fuel is injected into the cylinder in a larger amount every other working cycle so as to form a rich air/fuel mixture.
