A surface light source device is provided to design freely a shape of discharge space and to omit an existing spacer by forming a trench at an inner surface of at least one of glass substrates. A first substrate(111) includes a trench(114) formed on one surface thereof. A second glass substrate(112) is disposed opposite to the first substrate. The first substrate and the second substrate are attached to each other by using a sealing member(120) in order to form a discharge space. A phosphor layer(115) is formed at one of opposite surfaces of the first and second glass substrates within the discharge space. A first electrode(140) and a second electrode(150) are drawn from the discharge space to the outside. The discharge space is filled with discharge gas. A path is formed at the first electrode and/or the second electrode in order to inject the discharge gas into the discharge space.
