Systems and methods for generating mechanical and/or electrical energy are presented. A system generates mechanical energy by using direct current to cause at least one rotor to rotate within and/or around at least one stator and/or generates electrical energy by using the rotation of at least one rotor within and/or around at least one stator to generate an electromagnetic field. The at least one rotor comprises a plurality of magnets oriented in an array perpendicular to the at least one rotor's axis of rotation. The at least one stator comprises a plurality of magnets oriented in a rectangular array around the at least one rotor. The magnets may be permanent magnets and/or electromagnets.

1. A brushless DC machine comprising:
at least one rotor comprising a plurality of electromagnets; at least one stator comprising a plurality of electromagnets; and at least one sensor arranged to detect the position of the at least one rotor; a control system arranged to control the polarity of both the rotor and stator electromagnets.
