An electromagnetic acoustic transducer flaw detection apparatus (20) is disclosed which detects flaws in a metallic structure in which an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (32) constructed of a first array of magnets (42) and a second array of magnets (44) located directly adjacent each other and located transverse to a longitudinal axis (54) of the object under inspection. The first (42) and second (44) array of magnets are arranged such that the magnets of the second array (44) are aligned with gaps between each of the individual magnets of the first array (42) and the magnets of the first array (42) are aligned with gaps between each of the individual magnets of the secondary array (44).
