Disclosed by the present invention are a system and a method to monitor and control a combustion engine. The system according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a controller which: controls the operation of a combustion engine; receives a signal from at least one knock sensor combined with the combustion engine; determines a knock margin value from the signal; and estimates a quality value of fuel sprayed to the combustion engine at least based on a comparison between the knock margin value and a laboratory performance data set.
