A satellite dish 1 comprises a reflector surface 29 which is at least partially covered by a photovoltaic coating 7. A battery 9 is used to power a satellite receiver or modem 10, both mounted outdoors with the parabolic aerial 1 on a support 8. The dish may be oversized relative to the requirement from the link budget in order to generate more power for an electronic device, such as a mobile user terminal with a charging socket. The modem may provide an internet or television network connection through a local communications interface to at least one, possibly public, user terminal. Information on local information or landmarks may be cached in memory accessible via user terminals and conditions may be transmitted and monitored using temperature, pressure, moisture, light or chemical sensors or microphones or video cameras. Orientation may be via a vehicle mounted motorised turntable or face a fixed direction such as north when in the southern hemisphere. |
