A sheet metal brake shoe (1) to which a brake lining is bonded strongly and a method of manufacturing the sheet metal brake shoe easily at a low cost; the sheet metal brake shoe comprising a shoe rim (11), a shoe rib (12), a mounting plate (13), and a notch (14) provided on the outer peripheral surface of the shoe rim (11); the method of manufacturing the sheet metal brake shoe comprising the steps of forming a semi-finished rolled product having a short cylindrical part (33) obtained by expandingly forming the outer peripheral part of a metallic disk-shaped blank (20) in the direction of plate thickness and a web (34) extending from near the axial center of the short cylindrical part (33) on the inner peripheral surface thereof to an inner radial direction, providing a notch (14) on the outer peripheral surface of the short cylindrical part (33) by pressing a knurling block (9) against the outer peripheral surface thereof, and punching the semi-finished rolled product.
